The Break-Away Feature: Exclusive to the Rhodes Lever Design

The 03-200-RHO is the only standard (non-tactile) SFIC lever in the Schlage ND and ALX Series catalog that offers the optional break-away feature. The official Schlage ALX Series Data Sheet states: "Optional break-away feature available on Rhodes levers for most locking functions." This feature is not available on any other lever design in the 03-200 SFIC family, including Athens (ATH), Sparta (SPA), Tubular (TLR), and Omega (OME) in both standard and tactile variants.

The break-away mechanism allows the lever to fold down when subjected to excessive lateral force, absorbing the impact rather than transmitting it to the lock chassis. When a lever is subjected to a kick, a tool impact, or a sustained push or pull beyond normal operating force, the break-away mechanism displaces the lever rather than allowing the force to stress the internal cam, retractor, or spindle components. After a break-away event, the lever can be repositioned or replaced without replacing the entire lock chassis. This protects the more costly and harder-to-replace internal mechanism from damage during vandalism, attempted forced entry, or accidental impact.

When a project requires SFIC levers with break-away protection and the doors do not require a tactile warning surface, the 03-200-RHO is the correct specification. When break-away and tactile surface are both required at the same door, the 03-200-8RO (Rhodes Tactile SFIC Lever) is the lever that provides both.

Schlage 03-200-RHO vs 03-200-8RO: Standard vs Tactile Rhodes Lever

The 03-200-RHO and 03-200-8RO are the two versions of the Rhodes lever in the SFIC format. Both use the identical Rhodes profile and both offer the break-away option. The only physical difference is the handle surface: the 03-200-RHO has a smooth handle, and the 03-200-8RO has a raised tactile surface for hazardous area door identification per IBC and ADAAG requirements. The 03-200-RHO is specified for all standard Rhodes SFIC applications. The 03-200-8RO is specified only at doors where building code or facility policy requires the tactile designation.

NDE Series Exit Device Trim Coverage

The 03-200-RHO is documented in five Service Manuals including the Schlage NDE Series Parts Manual, confirming its use in NDE Series exit device outside trim assemblies. The 03-300-RHO was the legacy Rhodes lever for exit device trim before February 2017. The 03-200-RHO now serves both cylindrical/mortise (replacing 03-000-RHO) and exit device trim (replacing 03-300-RHO) under one current part number, matching the same consolidation pattern established for the 03-200-ATH Athens lever.

The 03-200-OME Omega lever does not cover NDE exit device trim. The 03-200-RHO, like the 03-200-ATH, does include NDE coverage. When specifying replacement levers for a Rhodes SFIC exit device trim installation (legacy 03-300-RHO), the 03-200-RHO is the current correct part number.

Rose Pairing, Finishes, and SFIC Core

The Rhodes lever (RHO and 8RO) pairs with the 03-042-RHO (Rhodes Rose) on both inside and outside trim positions. The 03-042-RHO is the rose that takes its name from this lever design and is used across all Schlage ND and ALX Series lever designs except the Omega. Finish for the 03-042-RHO rose must be specified separately to match the 03-200-RHO lever finish. Ten finishes are available for the 03-200-RHO: 605 (Bright Brass), 606 (Satin Brass), 612 (Satin Bronze), 613 (Oil Rubbed Bronze), 619 (Satin Nickel), 622 (Matte Black), 625 (Bright Chrome), 626 (Satin Chrome), 626AM (Satin Chrome Antimicrobial), and 643E (Aged Bronze). The SFIC core is ordered and installed separately by the facility's key system manager using the control key.
