The June 2019 Platform Update: Critical Ordering Note for 2017 to 2019 Installations

The 03-230-RHO applies to Schlage ND, NDE, AD, and CO Series locks manufactured after June 2019. Per the official Schlage product documentation on this page: "As of June 2019, all ND, NDE, AD CYL, and CO CYL levers are the same." This means the current 03-230-RHO is the correct replacement lever across all four series from June 2019 forward.

For locks manufactured between January 30, 2017 and June 2019, a different lever and spring design was in use. The January 2017 ND/NDE platform update introduced a change that affected AD and CO Series lever compatibility for that window. If the installed lock was manufactured in that 2017 to 2019 period, confirm the correct lever specification before ordering the 03-230-RHO to avoid a fitment mismatch. Locks manufactured before January 2017 also use the prior platform lever specification.

The 03-230 prefix identifies closed levers in the Schlage ND Series lever catalog. Understanding the difference between closed levers and other lever formats prevents the most common wrong-part order in ND Series lever replacements.

03-230-RHO (Closed lever, this product): No cylinder hole, no button hole. A solid lever body for inside trim positions where the lever turns freely. Used on storeroom inside levers, entrance inside levers, passage levers, and any function where the inside lever has no integrated cylinder or push button. This is the correct lever when the inside position requires free egress only.

03-231-RHO (KIL lever): Has a cylinder bore in the lever hub for a Key-In-Lever cylinder. Used on outside trim positions where a key cylinder provides outside access.

03-233 (Button lever): Has a push button hole in the lever hub. Used on functions where the inside push button locks and unlocks the outside lever, such as office, classroom, and entrance functions.

Ordering a KIL or button lever for an inside closed position leaves the cylinder bore or button opening exposed without a mechanism installed. Ordering a closed lever for a position that requires a cylinder or button leaves the function incomplete. Identify the trim position and function type before selecting the format.

Break-Away Option and Compliance Specifications

The optional break-away feature is available on Rhodes lever designs across the Schlage ND and ALX Series catalog, confirmed in the official Schlage ALX Series Data Sheet: "Optional break-away feature available on Rhodes levers for most locking functions." This applies to the 03-230-RHO closed lever. No other closed lever design in the 03-230 family (Athens 03-230-ATH, Sparta 03-230-SPA, Tubular 03-230-TLR, Omega 03-230-OME) carries this option. Only the Rhodes design offers break-away protection at the inside closed lever position.

The 5-1/8 inch lever length is the ADA-compliant standard for Schlage ND Series levers, confirmed on this product page. California Building Code Section 11B-404.2.7 requires operable hardware to have no sharp or abrupt edges and to return to within 1/2 inch of the door surface.
