The armor front is the metal plate mounted on the door edge face, covering the mortise lock body's door edge exposure. It provides three functions simultaneously. It gives the installation a clean, finished appearance on the door edge. It provides the openings through which the main latch bolt and auxiliary latch project to engage the strike. And it reinforces the door edge against physical attacks.

The "Latch x Auxiliary Latch" designation in the 09-669 product name identifies the two openings in this specific armor front. The main latch bolt opening allows the spring-loaded latch to project into the strike when the door closes. The auxiliary latch opening (also called the dead latch, anti-shim bolt, or guard bolt opening) allows the smaller rectangular auxiliary latch to project alongside the main latch. The auxiliary latch is the component that triggers deadlocking when the door closes - when the auxiliary latch is depressed by the strike frame, it activates the deadlocking plunger that prevents the main latch from being retracted by shimming, loiding, or credit card attacks. The armor front must have both openings in the correct size and position for the lock to function.

Standard commercial hollow metal doors are 1-3/4 inches thick. The standard L9000 Series armor front is sized and configured for 1-3/4 inch installations. The 09-669 is the alternate armor front for doors that fall under that threshold - older commercial buildings with lighter gauge door construction, interior hollow metal doors with thinner profiles, and wood doors thinner than the commercial standard. These installations require an armor front with different geometry or mounting positions to fit correctly against the thinner door edge face.

Using the wrong armor front (standard 1-3/4 inch) on an under 1-3/4 inch door results in an armor front that sits proud of the door face or leaves a visible gap between the plate and the door edge surface. Either condition is both a security concern and an aesthetic failure.

Schlage Auxiliary Latch Armor: Without Door Position Sensor Distinction

Several L9000 Series functions in the 09-669 compatibility list are electrified (L9091, L9092, L9093, L9095). Electrified functions can be optionally fitted with a Door Position Sensor (DPS). The DPS monitors whether the door is physically in the closed position, providing a monitoring output to the access control system separate from the latch or deadbolt status. When DPS is installed, the armor front requires an additional opening for the DPS sensor.

The 09-669 does not have this DPS opening. It covers non-DPS installations of all compatible electrified and mechanical functions. If the installation includes DPS monitoring, a different armor front part number is required.
