The Schlage LM9200 uses concealed cables because it's designed for pair door applications where the latch engages at the top and bottom of the door - not on the side - allowing both leaves of a pair to be active simultaneously without a mullion in the way. A conventional mortise lock engages a strike on the door frame side. The LM9200 instead engages strikes at the top of the door frame header and at the bottom threshold/floor, which frees the vertical center of the opening for unrestricted egress.

When the lever is operated or the key turns, the central mortise lock case retracts the side latch and simultaneously pulls on the internal cables. The top cable retracts the top bolt from the top frame strike. The bottom cable retracts the bottom bolt from the 24664997 bottom strike. The door opens cleanly with one handle operation across all latching points.

When the door closes, the spring mechanism on both the top and bottom bolts re-engages automatically - both bolts project back out into their respective strikes without any key or lever operation required. The door is secured at top and bottom points on the door close.

If the strike shifts in the frame, the bottom bolt and the strike keeper go out of alignment, and the bottom latch won't project fully into the strike on the door close. Over time this creates incomplete latching - the door appears closed but the bottom point isn't secured. Schlage LM Series Strike Cable: LM9200 vs LM9300 Bottom Strike

The LM9200 and LM9300 are both multipoint lock series in the Schlage LM catalog but they work differently and use different bottom strikes.

The LM9200 is the two-point cable system - top and bottom engagement through concealed cables. The 24664997 is the correct bottom strike for this series. The LM9300 is the three-point system for tornado, hurricane, and high-security applications - it engages at the side (standard mortise latch) plus top and bottom via vertical rods. The LM9300 uses steel reinforced top and bottom plates with 5/8" square stainless steel bolts rated to FEMA 361, FEMA 320, and ICC 500 tornado standards. These are different assemblies, different strike geometries, and different part numbers.

One additional ordering note: the LM9200 is available as "LBL" (Less Bottom Latch) when only the top point latching is needed. In LBL configuration, no bottom cable or bottom strike is used. The 24664997 bottom strike only applies to full two-point LM9200 installations where both top and bottom latches are active.
